There are many accounts of sea monsters during ‘The Age of Exploration’ 400 – 600 years ago, when European explorers sailed into uncharted waters. Their appearances were often thought to be prophetic, the harbingers of doom and disaster, or portents of great change.

Visitors are invited to sight Cragen at destinations along The Wales Way

Help protect Wales’ epic coastline from plastic pollution, by joining the many events and activities surrounding the tour.

Cragen is inspired by Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner’s illustrated book published more than 460 years ago.  This magnificent book held at Roderic Bowen Research Centre, University Wales Trinity Saint David. It’s typical of its time and includes imaginative sea monster illustrations with living animal features reported by superstitious sailors and intrepid naturalists. Cragen is inspired by a blend of tall tales and mythical imagery.
